A OneTab alternative that archives tabs by topic

OneTab made one idea popular: close your tabs into a list and bring them back later. Bookmark Organizer does a version of that for one topic at a time, built on Chrome tab groups. Here is how they differ, and when OneTab is the better pick.

Updated

What OneTab does

With one click on its toolbar icon, OneTab closes the tabs in your window and lists them on a single page. From that list you can restore tabs one at a time or all at once. It is popular because it is fast and needs no setup: whatever is open becomes a list, and the browser is quiet again.

What Bookmark Organizer does differently

  • It archives a topic, not a window. Ask the agent to archive a tab group or a set of tabs ("archive the Kyoto trip tabs") and only those are saved and closed.
  • Archives keep their shape. Each archive is a section with a title and a color. Restoring reopens its tabs in one window as a tab group with that same title and color.
  • Tabs are grouped before you archive. The same extension sorts loose tabs into Chrome tab groups by topic, so a topic is usually one group by the time you are done with it.
  • Safe defaults. Pinned tabs and browser pages stay open, and nothing is archived unless you ask.
  • Bookmarks too. It is also a bookmark manager: pages worth keeping can go into a suggested folder instead of an archive.

When OneTab is the better choice

  • You want a single click that clears every tab, with no setup.
  • You do not use tab groups and do not plan to.
  • You want a tool that does exactly one thing.

When Bookmark Organizer fits better

  • You work in topics and already use, or want, tab groups.
  • You want an archived topic to come back organized, not as a flat list.
  • You also want help with bookmarks, so pages you keep for good end up in the right folder.

Moving over gradually

There is no need to switch in one go. Reopen the OneTab entries you still care about, let Bookmark Organizer group them, then bookmark what is worth keeping and archive the rest by topic. If your bookmarks need the same treatment, read how to organize bookmarks.
